Studies continue to reveal connections between oral infection and inflammation to serious medical conditions, including heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Inflammation and bacteria in the mouth expose the entire body to harmful toxins that can worsen these conditions. Periodontal disease is also the #1 cause of tooth loss in adults.

Our goal as a periodontal specialty practice is to identify and treat all forms of dental disease as early as possible.

OralDNA® Saliva Testing

Atlanta Periodontist Dr. Susan Baker utilizes OralDNA® to test for 11 pathogenic bacteria linked to periodontal disease.

This simple oral rinse test can be used to support active periodontal therapy by pinpointing the types of bacteria that need to be controlled with treatment, medication, diet or home care changes. The results may also be used as a preventive measure to determine how prone a patient may be to developing periodontal disease.

After submitting the test sample to the OralDNA® laboratory, Dr. Baker receives a detailed report that lists pathogens found and their association to periodontal disease. Combined with her examination findings, dental x-rays and patient dental history, she will develop a treatment plan to meet the patient's specific needs.

OraRisk® HPV Testing

Early Warning High-Risk HPV Test

Dr. Baker provides patients with OraRisk® HPV salivary diagnostic testing to assist with oral cancer screening.

Specific strains of HPV (Human papillomavirus) have emerged over the last decade as the leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers, with the number of cases increasing at an alarming rate. Oral cancer symptoms are generally not noticeable to the patient, so it is often not detected until it has progressed to an advanced stage. Likewise with HPV, patients may not be aware they are infected and can pass the virus to their partner.

Early detection of HPV can assist dental and medical professionals in determining if the patient is at risk of oral cancer. Learn more about oral cancer.
