surgical gum treatment

Surgical Care

As a Periodontal Specialist, Dr. Susan Baker provides periodontal surgical procedures for her patients in her Norcross dental office.

Surgical procedures are sometimes necessary to treat periodontal disease, or to graft or re-contour bone and gum tissue in preparation for cosmetic, implant or major restorative procedures.

Dr. Baker works closely with your general dentist to provide periodontal surgery, implant or regenerative treatments, including:

single dental implant

Dental Implants

Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth and restore the patient's ability to chew and smile with confidence. Dr. Baker places dental implants in a surgical appointment, and the restorative dentist completes the implant restoration with a crown, bridge or denture.

Sinus Lift Surgery

Sinus lift surgery is performed to support placement of a dental implant in the upper arch when the bone level is not adequate. After numbing the area with local anesthetic, Dr. Baker uses special instruments to gently ‘lift’ a small section of the sinus cavity to create enough space to place a bone graft. After a few months of healing, the area is ready for a dental implant.

Ridge Augmentation

Dental ridge augmentation is used to add bone when there is not adequate support for a dental implant. Bone grafts are placed to rebuild the structural shape of the dental arch (the ‘ridge’) to give the restorative dentist a more substantial foundation for implant replacement with both retention and esthetics in mind.

Crown Lengthening

Dental crowns require enough natural tooth structure above the gum line to support the crown and to create a natural smile appearance. When the exposed tooth structure is too short, Dr. Baker can use the Waterlase® dental laser to reduce the soft tissue and bone and expose more hard tooth structure. After this crown lengthening procedure, the restorative dentist will have a greater surface area upon which to design and place a permanent dental crown.

Regenerative Procedures

Gum recession is a common occurrence with adult patients. It may be a result of periodontal disease, misalignment of teeth, teeth grinding/clenching (bruxism), erosion, toothbrush abrasion or other conditions. Gum recession can leave root surfaces exposed, causing the tooth to be very sensitive to cold air or beverages. Dr. Baker performs gum grafts (also called gingival grafts or connective tissue grafts) to stimulate gum growth to cover the root surface and reduce or eliminate sensitivity and further exposure.

Grafting procedures may be performed using the patient's own soft tissue (autograft), or, biomedical donor tissue grafts (autograft or alloderm) are available.

Sedation Dentistry

We will discuss sedation options with you in preparation for any surgical procedure. Our goal is to create the most comfortable experience possible for you while in our care. Learn more about Sedation Dentistry.
